I am not so happy saying that, but yes its last post for now on this blog. Hey that doesn't mean i will not write ... I have new Domain as you know and today I finally manage to transfer free blog account to my own Domain

Find my blog on http://www.sumitgupta.net. There is interesting story behind Transfer, well I was planning to shift my blog from 2 months, but really doesn't get time to backup my blog and Shift it to Wordpress , but finally I manage to write code for that, yesterday. And When I transfer it to my wordpress test installation it works fine. Than I start exploring "import" function in word press...<duh>

It has inbuilt transfer module that hardly take 3 min of my life to transfer blog ..wow and people say I am one of decent programmer .

But All wells if end well ( i heard that some where ) and since I am happy to get new domain... Good bye to SUMITWORLD @ BLOGSPOT.COM its now really Sumit's WORLD at sumitgupta.NET .

I face a new problem now a days while surfing internet website. As I am working on opensource software now a days, I some how get to some sites, that display a Warning message when viewed through "Internet Explorer" ...

Warning is something like you are view some blah blah kind of web browsers or IE. If you are view IE than some site is not viewable as other browser can easily replicate its "USER AGENT" string and does false detection....

interesting na ...false USER AGENT for IE. hmm and what more they prefer FireFox. If I remember correctly as I use that tool myself for Firefox, will easily allow anyone to switch to popular browser User Agent ... so firefox does that wrong User agent thing not IE itself. So why Internet Explorer is punished ?

As any other ASP.Net developer, I was not feeling comfortable with only one form concept that ASP.Net has (not sure about v2.0 as never work on it). Also, when you have to put something like google Search or other such service on your Site and place for such "explicit" forms are in middle of your Only "Runat Server form" how will you put the other forms ...

Well what I did is simply use IFrame, capabilities of web browsers. I simply make a HTML page of Google search, and using IFrame call that page. now since it load explicit HTML page, you don't have to worry about nested form, but simply about how it looks.

though It has a disadvantage that , on older browser your site might not be viewable, but who cares about old stuffs ... every body you should get new browser after all browser are free :)

in one of my last post i try to define how linux store its password. Today I will be putting Complete PHP code for it.

Just run it on your local server(mind it your Http server must be running as root user in order to use this script )

Its a raw way of doing password matching and shouldn't be used for commerical application or servers. its purely Learning script

So here goes the script

<?
//Script to test the Linux Password matching

function ReadUser($user)
{
    $fuser=file("/etc/passwd"); //Read passwd file to match user
    $UserFound = false;
    while(list($index,$value) = each($fuser))
    {
        $userlist = explode(":",$value);
        if ($userlist[0] == $user && $userlist[1] != '!!')
        {
            $UserFound=true;
            break;
        }
    }
    return $UserFound;
}

function MatchPassword($user,$password)
{
    $fuser = file("/etc/shadow");
    $UserMatch = false;
    while(list($index,$value) = each ($fuser))
    {
        $userlist = explode(":",$value);
        if ($userlist[0] == $user) {
            if (strlen($userlist[1]) > 6 && CRYPT_MD5 == 1) {
                $salts = explode("$","$userlist[1]");
                $salt = "\$1\$".$salts[2]."\$";
                $gen_password= crypt($password,$salt);
                if ($gen_password == $userlist[1]) {
                    $UserMatch = true;
                }
                else
                {
                    $UserMatch = false;
                }
            }
            else {
                $UserMatch = false;
            }
            break;
        }
    }
    return $UserMatch ;
}

if (ReadUser("sumit") == true)
{
    if (MatchPassword("sumit","sumit") == true )
    {
        echo "Login successful";
    }
    else
    {
        echo "Login unsuccessful";
    }
}
?>

Hope that helps learn understanding linux passwd and shadow usage.

first get the ifconfig output to awk, find "inet addr:" in it (for ip version 6 use "inet6 addr" ) than cut it in piece and pick the second one

One of my friend told me that they have a QA department in their company. I ask him what is QA ? and get this old word in new look "Quanlity Assurance". At that time I neglect that word and doesn't bother about it, as i don't know what it is. and thought why we need it.

Today, I have been asked that why I haven't check the coding pattern of developers working under me. Hmm , as a project manager and handling 15 projects at one go is it possible for me to check those things ? my answer is NO. not sure my boss love it or not( and ofcourse he will not love it).

But now its time for him to think of it. Can they get enough time to think even to check the coding, or about any such things?

Its partical problem in Small Software companies, they spend money, but on programmers only. But to make a application click we need more than just programmers
or maybe we need to re-read SDLC to know that we been a software company we need more than junior level programmers.

And also a Good programmer cannot do miracles. Software programming is Team work, Senior programmer/team leader/project manager all are good if their complete team is.

I looked around with my basic knowledge to see whats the cause of problem. And found these three things need to be modify in order to correctly upload file using PHP with Apache Webserver.

1) Check the php.ini for
upload_max_size it must be greater than what you required for example to upload 10 MB file you need

upload_max_size 10M  in PHP.ini

or

php_flag upload_max_size 10M in .htaccess (it will only work if Apache is not using SUExec , not sure why is it so)

2) Check the PHP.ini for post_max_size

in PHP.ini it should be
post_max_size 11M ( as you will be having some text field with your 10 MB file so make space for them, it should always be greater than upload_max_size otherwise you are not able to upload full size files )

3) Its not necessary is set by default. And not sure whats its default value, but if you are getting this error in your Apache Error log

Requested content-length of xxx is larger than the configured limit of xxx, referer: http://www.vikasumit.com

than you need this in your httpd.conf file

<Files *.php>
SetOutputFilter PHP
SetInputFilter PHP
LimitRequestBody 11534336
</Files>

this will set the PHP to have upload 11MB of body text, and header is not counted here. Again this must be set great than upload_max_size setting for php.ini

As I was working on a complex project from last 6 months, which is totally new thing for me to learn and develop. I was going all smooth till my company plan to expand my development team by providing me there Best Programmer to my project..ah sorry, not programmer but project managers. They are far more experince than me and are very good at there job.

Now, they are working on part of project that totally related to development of interface, based on my research on how to perform that action, with their knowledge of development tools for interface.

I am using PHP2GO web framework when I start the application, that provides all the feature one should require to develop a web interface in PHP. It has its own Email class, Database connectivity class, XML parsing class etc etc.

But as this new team start working and after two months of their involvment in this project, I still can observe that they are using traditional freely available classes for all operation I mentioned, I mean now my project has two classes for same operation because these senior members doesn't take their time to read current architecture of application.

Now, my problem is should I ask them to use their own method or should I close my eye ? Why I'm asking is simple, Once I have been told to not pressurize my collegue that are there because of their working abilities. Because they are not any junior programmer.

Since than, I always keep asking myself, what should I do in this respect?

Is there anyone going to guide me??? Please post a Comment to this blog entry I am waiting for it.

Command is simple for it though we need a PATCH installer package first.

Command is

patch -p1 < [Patch_file_name]

this will patch your source code...

Ah one thing, your patch file must be in root of your source code :)

So enjoy your patched codes

Now that I have some confidence on how to do that, I try to install linux on my Personnel PC and a magic happens. I have a Working Linux on my box, with a single crash.

I dual boot it with Windows XP for now... and never remove it from dual booting, afterall I am MS techonlogy developer as well.

If any one need some help on Linux, now you can ask me, I am confident to help.. btw for help you can visit http://www.linuxquestions.org as well its a good site.

Now, let me work on my linux box...

Today I have new problem with my apache 2.0 installation. It stop Picking document root files and give Permission denied Error in Apache Error log for those folders ... Seems strange to me.

I give FULL permission to that folder, try each and every combination of permission and owner that I think should work, but no use.

Why ... as this is first time I was running apache on SELinux enable system. It is "Extended Security for Linux"

Thanks to this post in Experts Exchange I got the solution
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Servers/Apache/Q_21171001.html

Last comment by kbensch is correct solution

It says to check the object Permission in extended mode with

ls -Z /dir/where/www/root/will/be

and than change it to permit httpd service to use it as its own data rather than users data using

chcon -R -h -t httpd_sys_content_t /dir/where/www/root/will/be
Though not sure what effect it has on user accessing this data ... as i am still new to linux and it has Extended Security now ...

Thanks to Experts exchange to bank that question for me :)

Today I discovered a new thing, it sound silly to most of developers, and might laugh on me... But Today I understood the mean of wrap="hard" for Textarea :).

Actually we hava a textarea for product description, and programmer add wrap="hard" in description, not sure why? And while displaying description for product, we just replace Line Break, Carriage return (\r\n or vbCRLF) with HTML Line Break
Sound simple, but I found that after doing this I got exact formatting of text that I have in textarea. No matter I put Line break in text or not, it always take line break .. :(

This is the result of wrap="hard" in textarea... It preserve the Formatting of text as its in terms of text wrapping and send that in that manner in POST Header.

Good thing to learn about HTML (Basic of Internet and its success )

I just discover how a Linux password is formed. This information is useful for those who have to write a piece of code for their software to either match user authentication or make new user from their script. Though Linux Provide PAM for the purpose, but for me configuring PAM for you application that can generate its password itself is not useful. But its recommended as its General application and if in future Linux authentication method or password saving change you can easily adopt to it.

Anyways, here is where we store User information in linux

/etc/passwd

and here we store its password

/etc/shadow

now shadow file has column seperated by [ : ] colons
like
sumit:$1$YgUxVnSK$/Y/QjCfBDyoZriQ7oQnxs.:13316:0:99999:7:::
in this it tells there is a user call sumit with password as $1$YgUxVnSK$/Y/QjCfBDyoZriQ7oQnxs.

This password is divided in Three parts seperated by $ (dollar) sign.
$1 is indication of fact taht its an MD5 crypted password
$YgUxVnSK is the salt use to crypt the password
$/Y/QjCfBDyoZriQ7oQnxs. is the password
But these values are read without $ sign :o)

So if you need to make a linux password simple take a Salt for your Password encryption and crypt your password with it and than append $1 with both values and write it in Shadow file.. simple

in PHP its quite simple to do ...just call crypt function with out any salt

like

$password= crypt("mypassword");

And in PERL you need to ensure a random salt as crypt function of perl produce different result on windows and on Linux :o(

in windows machine crypt function call will be
$password= crypt("mypassword","<twodigitsalt>");
produce some thing like

/Y/QjCfBDyoZriQ7oQnxs.

where as in linux it will be full linux password style

Hope I am clear in telling linux password, as programmer you don't need to know more on this...

I learn C++ while doing my high school, this experience doesn't include any work commerical project or for matter any kind of project accept making some basic Alogrithm Function that one learn while learning any programming language. But since than, I never touch C++, I always want to programme in it.

Know I get a chance to try my hand in this Dream Language of mine. I have to make Custom Authentication Module for Courier Imap, and you know what I doesn't know any Unix Standard for this as I never work on C++ for *nix System.

Though I haven't write my code yet, but tomorrow (if come for me :o) ) I will write that historic code for me, My First Professional C++ Code, and I will ask my company to allow me to post it on Net for every one looking for that code. (but don't be hopefully in getting code, but you know you can asking on how to do it anytime.)

So I am waiting for "tomorrow" to come only 17 Hrs + left for me to write that code...

waiting ...

During this time I come across lot of good and bad things about project management. To my experince with project management most of project we got in trouble are due to bad coding level or bad planning of project. These are two things that trouble me a lot in these two years.

This also teach me to make balance between different level of programmer working on same project. One thing that i notice is that good level programmers fight with problem like how to make code efficient where as low skill programmer keep themself busy with questions like How to make query, how to make Text box to do this and that, or user interface has some bugs how to fix them.

Though recently i come across one another major problem with project management, proper resource allocation, with resources i mean hardware and software and not man power, One of my project got delay just because of late supply of hardware, now as a programmer thats the worsts thing I want in my project to get delay because we don't have proper hardware or software for that matter. One can teach Junior programmer programming skill but management budget handling is not in our hand as Programmer.

Anyways life is now on road as my Three week long quest ends when I Configure EXIM and now its delivering mail to my virtual mail box :)

So rest about management when I learn to manage myself and my projects (this counter always remain above 5 )

Don't know whats light in it :o).

I used OpenLdap server to configure my service, So far able to add Linux based user to LDap server and can access the data from LAN machine through command line.

Will start more work on it ... seems a good application all together.

Its 3 days I have been doing this, First I thought Exim fulfill all my requirements,
I never heard of any other software other than MTAs for this requirement. I thought Exim alone is enough for making Mail server, but I was wrong, Exim fulfill one of the requirement for mail server. and it is only a MTA (Mail transfer Agent) that transfer emails from one server to other,

But it doesn't implement POP3 and IMAP which is required for a Mail client to recieve emails from your Mailbox on to your windows or linux desktop machine.

But good point is that I easily found other required software for the purpose like courier which I am also installing on my Mail server.

Hope fully I will get it complete today itself, Getting lots of error, but good point is still going ahead

after searching for my reply for a day atlast I am confirmed that Cpanel use only exim, Its simple that I can ask them , but believe me I have a post in their forum that doesn't have reply until one day past :(

And now I am able to install exim on my PC. A Bit different from other softwares that I install on linux box from source.
Actually I miss "configure" file for it...

But at the end I read its README and all is done as a piece of cake

So In future , do read README or INSTALL or such files before doing something new.

Best of luck all

I have been trying sendmail and Exim for whole day. Looking what exactly they are and how to use them. But still stuck on what they are. I found Sendmail and Exim both are MTA (Mail Transfer agent), but still my Cpanel installation shows that I have sendmail and exim install on same server, How can this be? If I have sendmail listening on Port 25 than where exim is listening for email?

Anyone any idea please post comment so that I can work on my project.

thanks everyone

What can I say about it. Simply amazing software. When I first look at Visual Studio 2002/2003 I thought what extra in a interface they can make. But with Express interface we have new Icons, and programming in no more just a Text editor... I thas cooool icons and things.

Try Debugging in VB Express and you really find the difference. Okay enough talk on Interface, now let me tell you one cool feature I like most...

Code Editing during Debugging.. in Days upto VS 2003 one has to break the Code execution and than make a text change and than run it again if you found one spelling correction while debugging.
But now, just go to editor window edit the spelling and press F8 as usual :o)

One more feature I observe.. while debugging I often try to make Xpath queries in Watch window, and there no "."(Dot) works but now it is. Hmmmm.. Microsoft is making us more lazy.

Yet to discover its features IF you have any let me know so that I Code rather than discovering

OR You must have heard of packages..

I have wrote few perl scripts for my on going Project. I use procedural programming logic and perform the action I want my perl script to do. It goes all good.

But one day I got a project analysis task, It's about Bugzilla a Bug Tracking software. I gone through its code and found a new concept. Making Packages in Perl. Now I got a Idea to implement my OOPs concept in perl. And I restart coding my perl scripts.

Now the result of my last 3 days of recode .. I reduce 40% of code

Though one thing concern me a lot if a programmer been paid for line of code he writes I get 40% less salary

I respect both software in sense they have there own commerical market. I did not rate any one above other as they target different audience to me. Its just that they try to take others market in different fields.

Some one told me Linux is free, Okay its free so...I have to download 700MB CD to make it run and Need a Internet connection to download all its free softwares and have to be connected to internet all time to make it run whenever I got any error.

But on windows once paid I never have to call there customer support nor I did need to Search internet for solution.. it just run every for me... For me its Cost is Covered..:D

Okay thats not my topic of the day. Let me give my points

Linux

* Has Better Security than Windows because it has Better User Rights Management (User Management is similar in both) its just that Linux has use better Rights policies from scratch.

* Has Speed and Control of even the smallest application like even you can remove Copy file command from your linux box.

Windows
* Has Organize Developement Framework : Please don't argue this with me, if its not than my PHP has two different version running parallely to each other , Why I still see Kernel 2.4 source for download , Why we have issue with upgrades on linux more than Windows. the truth is that Windows use Oops in better way than Linux, Most of Open source software are in process of having two version running simultenously, but Windows run one software at a time (technically) not in terms of version . I dont mind having Red Hat linux and Debian Linux and Fedore.

* Has Better User Interface: yes there are themes in linux much better than Windows (not Includes Vista here) But I really feel these theme loose consistency and User has to see and wait for mouse over popup to come before he click on new theme button.
Now with Vista Windows lose that point I guess though I never review it. (Anyone please send me its CD .:oD )

* (-) Bulking Graphics Engine and Too many Bulk code is going with windows, I believe Microsoft never clear their Code for Windows if they does Its install size must reduce by 200 -300 MB they have lot of Useless bulking code and software going with windows...

Hope I didn't break some ones heart

It looks like that I have complete all the things that are required, but when I try to "Extend" a Virtual Host on my apache server it fails, till later in the day I found the correct syntax to do the required...

To install Frontpage on Virtual host this works for me

./owsadm.exe -o install -t apache-2.0 -p 80 -xu testuser -xg testgroup -u testuser -p somepassword -m testuser.com -s /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

To uninstall Frontpage from Virtual Host

./owsadm.exe -o uninstall -t apache-2.0 -p 80 -xu testuser -xg testgroup -u testuser -p somepassword -m testuser.com -s /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

To fully uninstall I use this

./owsadm.exe -o fulluninstall -t apache-2.0 -p 80 -xu testuser -xg testgroup -u testuser -p somepassword -m testuser.com -s /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

hope that will help someone...

To add to my pleasure, I have to do this installation on CentOs 3.6 (since its old version you don't get much people tell you answer but, they are already there to search).

It took nearly two days before I can make a Successful Installation. What i do to install this is simply download Frontpage files from microsoft download section. Download relevant files from here. Instruction for relevant file are given on that page itself.

Next you just need to follow this Frontpage extension Installation Tutorial.

If you found some problem just go to Documentation on RTR.com.

and if you still have problem, Just let me know and I will try to solve your problem.

But after 5-6 year I get my answer. Now I need a better browser for my requirement since lynx is just a very basic browser and i know it from long time so I need another one for my requirement, just for sack of using new browser. And soon my search ends with Elinks (http://elinks.or.cz ).

It has cool interface (yes even on Black/white telnet window, it has popup menus and stuffs, just a great browser for black and white world of Linux Administrators...

Have a look at it, though it comes with my CentOs 3 and I am happy to get it there without any trouble :o)

And lot of us now have there own web server that are fully controlled by them. aah, not by them but by some applications called Cpanel, Plesk, webmin, etc etc.

Using these application you have hosted few domains on your webserver and it all works fine. But people who want to in depth of how a domain is hosted this article is for them.

let me define the domain. Domain is just a unique name given to your organization in cyber space. Actually this is not official defination but my way of looking to a domain. With my sentence above, I mean if I have Vikasumit.com it means "vikasumit" is a company/person/group/community/etc which is acting commerically. This is what the basic thinking of getting a domain.
This also mean "vikasumit.net" is a company/person/group/community/etc which is a active in Computer Networks. But these defination are avoided today and any one can have any domain for no reason. like a company will take .com,.org,.net and some there country domain for no reason. Infact for reason of mailing spam or "not to lose a single Hit".

Now, what is http://www.vikasumit.com than, well it's a URL for your "World Wide Web" that use "http"protocal by web browser and Machine that have your domain hosted.
Also, I have constantly us a word a webserver in this post refering to a hardware machine that I called dedicated Machine for your domain. I use this term in wrong manner as its not just a web server but in general a "server" which have web server, mail server, Nameserver and lot more servers running on it. I will explain these terms later in another post.

Its hard to write something ...:o)

Bye for today.

when I start working on my new project which is about managing Linux Server for web hosting requirements, Everyone near me is excited and they have very little idea about how to do this. Even I was wondering how can this be done as I am on of two members in our team working on this project.

Yes because of me I was wondering as I never work on Linux machine before. I am what my friend Sandeep (other team member in this project as well) called "windows Chela" (Windows Follower). With my all experince on windows and Microsoft technology, he too in surprise why I am with him for this project. But this is what maybe makes me different from other programmer around me.

Anyways, my company feels I can handle it, so I take it. Its that simple. When I first look into deep about linux and have two three meeting with Linux Administrator, I get the idea on how i will proceed towards this project. I pick what exactly Linux person does and how they handle the Problems in Linux. I observed three personnel for this.

All are same, Steps they follows are:

1) Read the Books on Basic Linux
2) Read online manual of software you are using
3) Just follow the steps in someone blogs or manuals
4) Run ./configure, make clean, make , make install these four commands and "Yeppy" you are the winner. I mean you install a software and use it...

So you get my point I still wonder why I am in team..:o)

Today I was reading making Script that runs as soon as user logs in to their linux box. During this research I found one interesting thing...

Command alias, In my words short cut to the existing big command is called Command Alias.
If you have used Fedore Core you may have used "ll" command to simulate "ls -l" now ll is an alias command for ls -l.

For example I want the Same ll command in my CentOs. I edit User Start up script for root found in /etc/.bashrc and put this line

alias ll='ls -l' there and now when I login as root user I get "ll" command

Recently, I was working on XML Parsing using ASP.Net. In this I have to AED (Add/edit/delete) Nodes as user enter data, I am comfortable with adding nodes as I have to create Element and just do...

objXml.AppendChild(newchildnode)

it works find, but when I have to delete which is more conditional and for me is not as simple to delete as adding new node...

My XML is something like this
<DEALS>
   <DEAL>
     <Products>
       <product>Product info</product>
     </Products>
   </DEAL>
   <DEAL>
     <Products>
       <product>Product info2</product>
       <product>Product info3</product>
       <product>Product info4</product>
     </Products>
   </DEAL>
</DEALS>

Now in this XML I have to delete the Product Info 3. One of my friends who has done it before suggest me to Iterate through each Deal and when my counter goes to node 2 just check and Loop (nested) for the products and if I found 2 item in the list delete that.
I have the node Serial No for deal and product with me, infact thats the only data I have to delete the node as as many deals can have as many products as user enter in them...
Secondly, I frequently getting error for the looping, error i got is Node I was delete is not a Child node of reference node.

Than I look for Xpath and after searching and looking for xPath in W3C site I got this piece of code

Dim file As String
file = "C:\mydata.xml"
Dim xmldoc As New XmlDocument
xmldoc.Load(file)
Dim node As XmlNode

node = xmldoc.SelectSingleNode("//DEALS/DEAL[2]/Products/Product[2]")
node.ParentNode.RemoveChild(node)
xmldoc.Save(file)

See the line node = xmldoc.SelectSingleNode("//DEALS/DEAL[2]/Products/Product[2]")

It tells the Xml document object to naviagte to Second Deal in the Deals node and than goes to its product and Pick Second Product and than using
node.ParentNode.RemoveChild(node)
I go to node parent and remove "node" child from its list and save the Document again. Now I have deleted the XML node I want with just two line of code.

Happy XMLing

Lately, I have to work to make a T-Shirt designer Studio in two site, the difference is that two site were made in PHP and ASP.Net respectively. But the common this that comes as most difficult part in this is obviously designer studio itself.

So, what exactly my problems are with studio, well both the language support Graphics with there own method and style, PHP provides a Extension to its platform called GD Library (yet another Good Open source Code) and ASP.Net has its well know System.Drawing Namespace to help me.

With PHP Codes is very simple and sequential for me to write, just make a function call and it start creating Image, Quite ease and result are good.

But when I start working on ASP.Net project, Image creation is much easier if you have idea on how to make bitmaps and know some theoritical knowledge about them, which I don't have but thanks to some good men work available on Internet, I am able to complete them.

But whatever language you choose, you need to make the interface in FLASH, as I tried Javascript at first, but that was a sad story for me.

Anyway more details on this will be posted soon.

Today I will be discussing common mistake I have seen new programmer does. You have observed often that there is a small Checkbox lying just below your Password field in most of the site. You often Check that box so that next time you visit that site you don't need to get yourself logged in again.

I have seen programmer coding this with following Logic...

1) Check if User exists, If not raise an error.
2) If User exist but doesn't have its password match in database, raise an error.
3) if all goes well and User has selected that little checkbox Make a Cookie and Allow login process... to goes on.

I guess that Logic is correct... Okay you are smart enough you get the error in the logic.

Yes, While raising error Programmer often forget to check the Little "check box" called remember me... What if he hasn't select it, this means user doesn't want his information to be store on this computer even a login failure occurs.
And if he doesn't select it you need to clear Cookie if already exist.

That is what user indent most often.

So, next time you program a Remember Me feature thing twice it is not just a matter of setting cookie, it is a Programming logic.

Happy Coding

If you are "Talented" no one needs you. If you know how to solve problems and can do stuff that really doesn't matter, atleast this is what I feel. As employeer only need his company grow, no matter what way it grows.

I have joined my company as "Web Developer" in PHP, But in last one year of so with my company, now I have been given a designation of "Project Manager". infact quite a while ago I was promoted to this designation. I have develop sites in ASP.Net on windows 2003 server, configure this server for few .Net related stuff, Configure IIS to host web services used in my ASP.Net application.

Also, I am responsible for handling our In house Linux server, its configurations, installation etc.

PHP, Perl ,ASP, ASP.Net are few languages I am currently working, not to mention HTML, Javascript , XML , CSS are basic for web development. A Web developer is nothing without these four things.

Still, I am not the best in my company, Still I lack behind to many who are only able to develop application using other's code or Open Source Code, which i am not capable of logic.

My biggest weakness is I am not able to find codes other can find on "Google". I only thing and write logics for them, only few time I get codes from google or yahoo or forums. To become a Successfully Developer this is very weak point that you cannot search free codes.
Well I guess I should Start using open sources code, and become a Member of Proud Association called CAPPA ( Copy And Paste Programmer Association), because this is what Matter at the end.

Sad story ends here..:o)

But, still as usual I look for free codes available for the same. I search and very quickly find my problems solution...

http://carlosag.net/Tools/WebChart/Default.aspx

A Free control for ASP.Net Charting requirement, It gives fair bit of customization as well. after testing it I said to myself, why waste time when I have ready to use solution without paying any thing to anyone.

So, I just start using it. Take a look and decide your self. Good, easy to use, Bar graphs, pie chart creator control.

Have your stats come to you in graphical format now...

As I start working on my X-Cart modification project, I learn few things. One of the most important thing among other is How a bad planning change the Good design patterns.

X-Cart uses Smarty for Template handling. Smarty as you might know is a Template engine by PHP itself (http://smarty.php.net). It is based on concept to make Business Logic seperate from Display Interface.

If you see ASP.Net does the same in almost all respect. But X-cart implementation to smarty is very unique in its kind. I don't know if they really required that complex file structure for their code. If I have to change the page logic I do need to change the Template files in some cases. And to my experience in Shopping carts with the features that X-Cart provide it can de done with less complexity than X-Cart has.

When I first take a look at Oscommerce, I thought it is not perfect yet, But when I compare it to X-Cart (paid software) with free software like OsCommerce. I thought Oscommerce has much better implementation. Especially with its Template engines module you can easily change design in Oscommerce, But not in X-Cart.

Anyways Both are Good software in view point of End Users. But If you are really looking for software that you want to customize please go with OsCommerce.

Bye for now, I have to test Jaws Framework now, lets hope some good codes from them.

I have been doing web development for linux and windows from 2 years now, and i have come across only developers that really knows the difference between the two operating system, Most of them says whats the difference between two Operating system, after all they get apache running on both.

The first difference is the way file permissions are implemented on two operating system. In this post I am only going to explain the File Permission required for PHP based website.

First, What is File Permission? Simple, as word suggest permission give to the person who access the file. Now, Second question, who is the person? Well it can be File owner (linux user) , Group Member (Please read Linux Users manual for this) or anybody else in this world.

Now Linux runs each service under one user and group. Now, the web server also runs as some user in the Linux Machine. This member is not the User and not the Group member of the group Site Owner generally is the member. So, we need to implement three Person ( User, Group, Everyone ) different permission.

What all permission we can set? For this the answer is simple
Read, Write , Execute...

Now, To set run a PHP File you simply need to give Read permission unless you are running a system commands through PHP, that is either a call to File open, or Using CURL, or running exec function you just need to give Read permission to all three. But than who can you modify your script. So you need Write permission,

Ahh, My group member should allow to modify the file... than you can give Write permission to him as well.

Now, I want it to be public script any one can edit...Than Please don't read this post and simply run

chmod 777 myfile

Anyway's In typical condition we need to give 644 Permisson to a PHP script unless it is using some above suggested request in that case we need to give 755 a permission.

Hope this is so some help in understanding the file permission on should give to run its PHP scripts...

More on this will be posted on my site soon, till than bye from me

Today i feel very disappointed by recieveing a support mail from X-Cart. X-cart (http://www.x-cart.com) is a Online Shopping Software, unlike OsCommerce its paid.

Anyways, they have to say that People in few of countries Pirate Software so, they don't have anything for them.

Well, why everybody blame others, They say few countries have more chances of piracy, but is there any country where there is no piracy at all. If No, than why blame on few countries only.

If one doesn't do good work it doesn't mean whole coummunity is bad. If you ask for Free,Open source Software, than what if you have pirate software.

It doesn't mean I support Pirate software but atleast you shouldn't blame other for some bad things, if you Feel something is bad, try imporve that.

And if you are software developer Please put the Rate according to country ecomonic and believe me every one use original software.

I hope for better future of softwares

Good bye for now

today I thought to take backup of my blog. But Blogger.Com doesn't provide a direct method for free blog like mine.

Hmm.. I found a Knowledge base article on Blogger Help about the Backup, but it gives the idea of how to take backup and says to publish your blog.

Well I just refine that method and got the back of my blog in XML format.

How?
Well I just create this code

<blogger>
<author>
  <$BlogItemAuthor$>
</author>
<time>
  <$BlogItemDateTime$>
</time>
<date>
<blogdateheader>
<$BlogDateHeaderDate$>
</blogdateheader>
</date><blogbody>
<$BlogItemBody$> </blogbody>
<comments><blogitemcommentsenabled>
<blogitemcomments><comment><comment-author>
<$BlogCommentAuthor$>
</COMMENT-AUTHOR><comment-date>
<$BlogCommentDateTime$>
</COMMENT-DATE><comment-body>
<$BlogCommentBody$></COMMENT-BODY>
</comment></blogitemcomments>
</blogitemcommentsenabled></comments></blogger>

Now I go to Edit template mode and first take backup of my original blog. Than put the above code and click the preview button. Oh i forget to metion that I first set the Settings->formating blog counter to maximum entries i have in my blog. than When I click the Preview button it just give me the XML of my blog with comments in it.

Now I goto View the HTML source of Pop Up window and It contain my XML file (half hidden) I got all the Blog entry and place them in the XML file and that is it.

You need to know the XML format to make it correct XML though and clear the generated code as well.

Now I have my blog back up with me.

though I Request Blogger.com to please make a arrangement of the Backup of blog or Simply allow to have Atomfeed of ones blog to take all the entries with comment in it, And we save that XML for our Backup.

Have a nice day and Wishing you Happy new year to all

At first it seems little complicated, but later on as I spend few hours I got the feel of it and see its working, My first opinion about it changes. Whats my first opinion that it is one of best code software..

It organization is much more complex than it should be, I provide few things for me for customization than the complexity it contain. To add the custom product attributes I have to insert data in as many as 5-6 tables.

Seems exciting ...lol
this is where I recall the use of Store procedure in Ms SQL Server which are useful in these situations.

Anyway If I got time I will try to put a guidline for those who need to edit shopping cart in Oscommerce.

As my first projects in ASP.NET Progress , I really asked myself, Is ASP.NET is really that Easy language to do things?

Let me Make Comparsion of it...
In PHP and Mysql combo I need to show Show Some data from Database and allow user to sort the Data on any coloumn..

What I get is 300 Lines of code for this... I shows All data Make a hidden field where user can click a Title and Coloumn sorting is done...
Simple Function for Paging (like I explain in my Paging Tutorial http://www.vikasumit.com/tutorial/programming/php/paging.php )

And too Achieve this in ASP.Net and Ms SQl Server..
I will be using Data Grid , Assign Property for Sorting and Pagings... Some less code written by me and Some more code added by Designer window of VS

Every thing works equally So, I just cannot realise whats the difference here...

Now, What I realise is this I write a code in ASP.Net much faster than in PHP as I have to Drag and drop Data Grid, I have to write less code no matter if lot of code is added by Deisgner window.

So, for me written a single page script is no difference, So where you can find the difference in these two languages...

Well, I can say that in Application level I really find ASP.Net a much organise way of doing things, but really it need you to put in some extra efforts as well. These extra efforts are Called as "Analysis" and found at Top of SDLC chart.

If you miss this part please never use ASP.NET for your project, you will end with the application that has lot of bugs, And this is the only thing that make me to write this POST, my first ASP.NET project without any Analysis ...

As a coder I cannot do much when your project manager are not there to do anaylsis, So chossing a language is not a fun, it is a most important thing for me from now on.

And Hope to get finish these projects as soon as possible

I have been using Google Adsense from some time now...
Looks good at first , infact till now I am happy with it. But One thing that I note about it is that its senses are not good yet. It sense one of my Page in site as PHP based content and Display Ad for PHP, that seems ok ..

but the that page is about my Chess Game First thing and Chess game made in Vb.Net , hmmm... Now where is the PHP come from.

Well the Page is actually coded in PHP (My complete site is in PHP) and some where in Meta Description it has PHP other wise no where else ..but still it pick those two words only and leave Poor .Net ... lol

Anyway it does bother much if you still earn from it..

ASP.Net has a habit of putting its own action for the Form that runs at server...Every one knows that..But only few knows that this can be change with just simple code of Few lines...

How?

well we just need to intercept the Form tag rendering and put our own Action attribute simple..

Not clear than wait until i post more information on this ..
Or Search MSDN for the same.. it has few tutorial on this..I don't have the Blog entry from where I found the solution but will post it soon..

I was working on my ASP.NET application in this I need to Fetch the Image link from Database and show the Image and if the Image is not there in Database than i need to display the NoImage...

Simple..

Now, I ask my friends how to achieve this and they suggest me this..

if isdbnull(objSqlcmd.ExecuteScalar) then
   Image= "Noimage.gif"
else
Image=objSqlcmd.ExecuteScalar
End if

hmm.. IF image is there .. Show that one other wish show NoImage.gif good one..

But Not for me I found that it actually run the Query twice and for one thing running a query twice is not a good idea..

so,

I do this...

Try
      Image=objSqlcmd.ExecuteScalar
Catch
      Image="NoImage.gif"
End Try

and this what I said.. IF I TRY this..

Today I made Custom Controls in ASP.Net. What a pleasure it is. I have written the code for it first time but really I enjoy doing that and it makes my life much easier and my code more readable. Actually I need to Parse the Amazon API for my Project and than display data from there.
One of my friend has done that in PHP as I am equally comfortable with PHP i take a look at his scripts and the code doesn't impress me much as I knew ASP.Net has better answer to that question, and Yes I am write I have written much more read able code than PHP code I saw.

I wasn't too sure about the performace of my code though but thank God it runs much faster than I thought and infact it is faster than PHP code for the same purpose.

I have to say this time that ASP.NET is better than PHP

Bye for now

Put this in the HTML Head Section
        <meta equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

And use this PHP Code to Extract the unicode from the Database
<?
$con=mysql_connect("localhost","root","") or print("DB connection fails");
$db=mysql_select_db("sumit_textbook") or print("DB db selection fails");

$query="SET NAMES 'utf8' ";
$result=mysql_query($query);
$query="SET CHARACTER_SET 'utf8'";
$result=mysql_query($query);

$query="select * from t_IndPerson";
$result=mysql_query($query);
while($row=mysql_fetch_array($result))
{
    print_r($row);
}

Today I share my Experince with XML using .Net.

I need to build a application in which I have some application specific configuration. In general we have Options

1) Either to Use ini files
2) Windows Registery
3) XML Files

So I opt for XML as its something new for me. I get XML video form Microsoft site and it really help in using basic of XMLwriter and XMLreader Class included in .Net System namespace.

At first its little hard to control the file using them but at last I made a required class that works in a similar way as the Windows API. Soon I will post that Class in my site http://www.vikasumit.com So Keep watching...

Recent I post that how .Net treat objects. Just in continuing the things here.

In one of my program i need to make a 2D array of a Class. Now, I need a copy of that array object in some other function.

So far so good, than I try the basic what come to my mind should work

MyFunction (MyArrayObject)

But this passes the object reference. Now, I try another thing

MyFunction (MyArrayObject.Clone)

but still it doesn't work.

So, I just do special efforts to make a new array and copy each value manually.

So the moral is :

You cannot pass an multidimensional array of class object byVal even by cloning it. You need to do manual effort to complete this task

Some Cool Downloads

Hi,

I know that this is one of the basic things but I discover it today. "How .Net handle a Class object if they are assign to other object of same class"

Well I have written a class in VB.Net and unfortunely Vb.Net doesn't support Operator Overloading. Therefore my Class is unable to load the = operator. Now, When I by mistake does this
=============================
Dim x as new  NewClass
Dim y as new NewClass
x=y
=============================

It actually make x as the reference of the y :o)

I keep finding that where is the bug in my software.

So Moral of the Article is that :-

The above statement will make the reference of on the RHS object to the LHS if the assignment operator is not explicity overloaded for that Class.

bye for now

I have been in web development since last one year and come across many issues of desgin and programming related to different feature of browsers. But My concern to these issue always restrict to Mozilla's Firefox and Internet Explorer only. I never thought of Netsacpe in this.

Firebox is really a worth ful browser especially if you are a web developer with its already available Tools for web developer. It is not that these tools cannot be made for IE but no body bother to do that with IE. anyway I am talking about the Few good feature I like most in FF is that it has extension that make it better than IE in some places.
One of such extension I like most is "Web Developer 0.9" it has many tools of usefulness

And now FF and IE stand for different purpose for me... FF for development and IE for better look Graphics and User Interface while I am just a normal Internet surfer..:o)

I use both as both has some advantage over other.. I cannot say that they have disadvantage over other ...

Happy surfing

Today I want to share my work experince with you. I my job I do the role of web programmer but it miss something...that is my Working programming language... so I start using different languages Now I am working on PHP , ASP, ASP.Net and Perl. That make my job very interesting and I love doing it.

and I hope that continue for ever.. :o)

That is why I can say you should not compare the language but compare the logic you implement to program.

Programming is nothing but a logic that a developer build and strickly not a language in which he does it.

Well I am surprise to see that Vb.Net complier version 2003 doesn't support the operator overloading and it has no indirect way of doing this either.

If one need to overload it has to write a function for that purpose.
If anyone still find any way of doing it please let me know by posting comment to this blog

I have to change my code to C# to make it use operator overloading.. :(

I very good incident happen to me...

I have tell you all that my site is now entered in Google.com search index. After completion of its 15 days there when Google refresh its index it "Half index" my site. I doesn't know the reason but it remais that way for more than 1 month. And i am wonder why. Infact by now Yahoo.com has also index my site and it increase my concern about it.
Than one day i found thatI have put some meta tags in My Pages

[name=keyword] in meta tag

And i found that meta tag misses my names initial "s" from it

it should be keywords not keyword...

Now, I am again waiting it to be index again at Google as i want.

Wish me best of luck....
